Writing SEO Content: From Keyword Research to Top 10 Ranking
My proven workflow for content that ranks – with concrete examples from my projects.
Why most SEO texts fail
90% of websites don't get organic traffic. The reason? They write for search engines instead of people. My approach is different: I write for people AND optimize for Google.
The result: For MANA-Verlag, I was able to get over 20 keywords into the top 10 and increase organic traffic by 125%.
My 7-Step SEO Content Workflow
Step 1: Systematic Keyword Research
Find keywords with high search volume and realistic ranking potential.
My Tool Stack:
- Ahrefs: Keyword Ideas & Difficulty
- Google Keyword Planner: Search Volume
- AnswerThePublic: Questions & Longtails
- Google Search Console: Existing Rankings
Sweet Spot: 500-5,000 search volume, Keyword Difficulty under 30
Step 2: Analyze Search Intent
What does the user really want to find? Google the top 10 and analyze:
- Informational: User wants to learn (Guide, Tutorial)
- Commercial: User compares (Comparison, Test, Review)
- Transactional: User wants to buy (Product page, Shop)
- Navigational: User searches for specific page (Brand)
Step 3: Create Content Outline
Structure your content before you write. Analyze the top 10 rankings:
My Outline Template:
- H1: Main keyword (exact or slightly varied)
- Intro: Problem + Solution in 2-3 sentences
- H2: Main topics (extracted from top 10)
- H3: Subtopics & Details
- Conclusion: Summary + CTA
Step 4: Write Content (Quality > Quantity)
Write comprehensively, but not bloated. My rule of thumb:
- At least as long as the average of the top 10
- But: Only relevant info, no filler text
- Short paragraphs (2-4 lines)
- Bullet points for lists
- Examples & screenshots where appropriate
Step 5: Optimize On-Page SEO
Now comes the technical optimization:
Checklist:
- ☑ Keyword in Title Tag (Position 1-3)
- ☑ Keyword in H1 (exact or synonym)
- ☑ Keyword in first 100 words
- ☑ Keyword in 2-3 H2 headings
- ☑ Meta Description (150-160 characters)
- ☑ Alt-tags for all images
- ☑ Internal links (3-5 per article)
- ☑ External links to authority sites
Step 6: Publish & Index Content
Don't wait for Google. Force indexing:
- Google Search Console: URL Inspection → Request Indexing
- Update XML Sitemap
- Share on Social Media (Social Signals)
- Set internal links from strong pages
Step 7: Monitoring & Optimization
Content creation is not the end, but the beginning.
My Monitoring Workflow:
- Week 1-4: Daily ranking checks (Ahrefs)
- From Week 4: Optimize weekly
- After 3 months: Content refresh if necessary
- Analyze CTR in Search Console → Optimize Title
Practical Example: MANA-Verlag Case Study
Initial Situation
Keyword: "Buy role-playing books" (1,200 search volume/month, KD 28)
Measures
2,400 words guide, 15 internal links, 8 product recommendations, FAQ section
Result after 3 months
Position 4 in Google → 320 organic visitors/month → 24 conversions
Avoid Common Mistakes
- ✗
Keyword Stuffing
Keyword density over 2% appears unnatural
- ✗
Thin Content
Under 800 words rarely rank in top 10
- ✗
No Search Intent
Content does not match user expectation
- ✗
Duplicate Content
Copied texts are penalized
Conclusion
SEO content is not witchcraft, but craftsmanship. Follow this 7-step workflow, be patient, and optimize continuously.
From my experience: You'll see the first rankings after 4-8 weeks. Top 10 positions after 3-6 months. But then the content often ranks for years and generates passive traffic.
